Featuring an Original 19th Century Building

This month I am featuring a very interesting building that I illustrated for clients Karen and Tom Malik.  The building as of 2011 is now the home of Strawberry Moon, a very high-end martini bar located at 204 S. Main Street, Wauconda, IL.

For over 125 years this structure has lived many lives in the Wauconda community and it all started back in 1889.  As the community of Wauconda evolved during these years so did this building.  If the walls could talk, there would be volumes of conversations documented on the life of the residents who visited there.

A.G. Potter Shoe Repair business resided at the 204 S. main address after it was constructed in 1889.  Going forward it became the home of a ice cream parlor, a pool hall, and various restaurants and tavern venues.  The building also served as a waiting room for the Willow-Bend Bus Line in the 1920’s.

The Malik’s had contracted with Pathmann Architects to do the renovations.  The second floor was opened up to accommodate private parties and special events.  The live music floats up to the open area of the second floor.  There is also a roof-top seating area that you can share with friends and enjoy the view!  The renovation details are very evident as you can see in the below photo.

Interesting artifacts were also found during the renovation.  Some of these items were milk bottles from a diary in Mundelein in 1931, and a 1889 soda pop bottle.  Refer to the Strawberry Moon website for more information on this building transformation and the treasures that were gleaned from the renovation!

Contact Karen Malik to book your next birthday party, retirement party, shower, and girls night out party.   Strawberry Moon is a great place to have your next event.  Don’t miss their live entertainment as well!  Check out the calendar. They also serve wonderful appetizers and wine, too!  I highly recommend this jewel for you to visit with friends!  Enjoy the food, custom martinis, wine and of course the live entertainment

I illustrated the historic structure in pen and ink with a water color wash.  Then I had several other items produced from the original image.  The image was transferred to a slate piece and then onto sandstone coasters.

“We love Kathleen’s illustration of Strawberry Moon!  The illustration captures the aura of the 19th century building, as well as our contemporary martini bar – it says “walk right in”  We have kept the illustration and the matching white slate plaque on display upstairs – and enjoy the functional rendering on our set of coasters at home.  It was a wonderful experience working with Kathleen – a fantastic artist and lovely person.”  ~Karen Malik – Owner of Strawberry Moon
